A palace for Art

India Sketch Book 2014 panels 27,28 by Meera Rao

The last four panels of the sketch book are filled with details from the Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery and Performance center at the Jaganmohan Palace.  The performance hall has many beautiful stained glass windows. The beautiful building is unfortunately crumbling and in dire need of renovation and restoration.

The arches on the many doors on the hall were also decorated with colorful paintings and sculpted relief.

The circular motif sketch is from the front facade of the building - there were about 10 motifs on each of the pillars and each was different scene.  This was the lowest one that I could see clearly :)

I was able to sketch only a couple of the stained glass windows before a 'Yakshagana ' performance started.  I did not sketch on the back side of the pages as the sketches had bled through to the other side on a lot of the sketches.

Sketchbook spread out on the floor 110" x3.3"

I tried to take a picture of the sketchbook all spread out little over nine feet long ! This was the best I could do  :)

Oh my goodness! That's fantastic to see them all lined up like that! What kind of sketchbook do you use? I really admire the way you portray the things that you see so carefully, and the information you share about everything! Meera, I really think you could publish books with your words and pictures in them!

Beautiful Meera. I love stained glass windows and wish I had some in my house.

Wow Meera, what a treat!
I love to visit Jaganmohan Palace and especially love to stand in front of the scene where my great grand father sits as a asthan musician at the Darbar.

Katherine, Thank you! I hope to publish mu sketch books on India -- right now it feels like a daunting task :(

I used the small Japanese Album by Moleskine for this set. I also have a larger one that I am yet to post. The continuous pages let me decide the size of the sketch as I worked and gave the sketches a connection to each other which I was really looking for. thanks again for your support!
