Between Bangalore and Mysore is the town of Channnapatna where a particular form of wooden toys are made from Aale mara/Ivory wood and lacquered in brightly colors.According to Wikipedia "This traditonal craft is proteced as a geographical indication, under the World Trade Organization and admistered by the Government of Karnataka" Every town, city, and village around here sell these toys with colorful road side displays. The tree lined streets of Mysore are also littered with various kinds of seed pods. Sadly, I found the people around are also ignorant of even colloquial names or which pod belongs to which tree!I have been scouring the internet in search of name of the long pod for a while now. If you know what these are, please let me know!

Hello Meera, your pods look like what we call Milk Weed. They break open and out comes silky strands with seeds on the end that fly away and plant themselves elsewhere. The strands really do feel quite silky. Do your pods do the same thing?
Thanks carol! But I think that's not it as these come from huge trees. I have to find some native Mysorean to get an answer - quite a few of the residents are transplants from other parts of the country :)

I always wondered why you didnt touch the Channapatna toys yet, these are so beautiful Meera, in olden days they were quite strong and sturdy, now they are very delicately made.

Padmaja, thank you ! This time I was awake while passing thru Chennapatna on my drive from Bangalore to Mysore and was able to visit parts of Mysore that have emporiums etc:) the variety of toys now manufactured are way beyond the traditional designs too!
