The Kitchen Is A Country

India Art Journal, July 10,11,12,13

Soon after I arrived my MIL gave me a tube of 'odomus' as a weapon against mosquitos, this being the monsoon season! But I have not had to use it at all.  Sadly, the monsoons are very late this year and reports of draught, spoiled crops fills the newspapers :(

Since most of my time is spent in the kitchen, I think its no wonder rest of the sketches in this page are all about the most important room in the house :)  The kitchen in the house has the bare minimum essestials but fresh ingredients and vegetables from daily marketing means very tasty meals!  It has given me a new perspective of minimalism. As a quote from Grimod de la Reynière says so eloquently,  “The kitchen is a country in which there are always discoveries to be made.

Meera this page looks yummy. I love the tooth paste tube.

The kitchen sketch was so real, took me back to my home in Delhi, the bright red gas cylinder with a tube emerging out from underneath the counter, the two burner stove, the morning milk packet deliveries (it is an art to open them and pour in the container without spilling it!), and the universal odomos!!! Of course, the scissors (along with the missing 'gas lighter') have a prominent visual place in the kitchen wall! Where is the gas lighter? I am home sick. :)
It is so real. I am curious what your spiral notebook captures next!

I see the gas lighter - I don't know how I missed it the first time :)

Thanks Carol! I am enjoying the process so far - hope I won't run out of steam --I know I won't run out of ideas :)

Ana, thank you! 'odomos' is for warding off mosquitos even though it can easily be mistaken for toothpaste! I am sure people have used it as such while fumbling in the dark :)

Thanks so much, Abha! yes, those things are such classics aren't they? And unfortunately, I still have not mastered pouring the milk from the pkt without spilling :(

It is easy to miss since the sketches themselves are so small :)

Pretty cool details here Meera, hanging katri caught my attention first! Gas cylinder is just too neat:-)
