Inadvertently Omitted...

A Day in the Life..... page 22 Sketchbook Project color pencils

'not intentional, not on purpose, not conscious'  -- it is the definition 'not conscious' that stings! And it is not the first time this has happened - and not just in art either. I felt so very disheartened.  It truly represented a 'Day in The Life'.  I decided to  force  myself to consider this as a set up for a new twist in my Sketchbook Project ! This time my 'inadvertent omission' had created three empty pages right in the middle of a book with a planned narrative and a challenge for me to somehow resolve it and to incorporate  new ideas into the story line.  I did not want to just tear the pages - a self imposed constraint to be a bit creative to compensate for my slip; to be grateful that it is a small mistake in the scheme of things,  a way to assuage my guilt for not being mindful....

What do you do when mistakes 'happen' in your work? Do you despair and scrap the whole project? Do you change it? Do you cover it up? Do you start over? Do you call it divine intervention and move on?

That is a very good question! I admire you for not tearing out the pages. You took adversity as a challenge to make yourself even more creative! I guess the answer to the question is another question... is this thing that I'm considering a mistake truly a mistake? or a new opportunity? I would love to see the whole sketchbook someday, page by page!

That is a good question meera. And I love the way you are giving it such thought, the path of a true artist in my opinion. :) I usually just bag it if I've ruined something and start over or move on to the next project that's inspiring me, chalking it up as a learning experience and not lingering over the despair I want to feel. Today is a new day!

Krishna, Thank you!

I like your advice, AK :)

Katherine, I like your question to my question --thats how I felt about it and decided to see how I could incorporate it into the narrative and the sketches. I also find that often, what I think as a mistake, problem leads me into a challenging and in the end a satisfactory path.

And you can see the whole book online at Arthouse Co-op :

Thanks, Crystal! I have a hard time just discarding the paintings that are not working... but that has also given me lots of pleasure when I go back and fix/change them to my satisfaction. Check a couple of my paintings that came that way:

'Ignorance' that I highlighted in my seven links project was also a discarded version of :

which originally was trying to be a realistic watercolor painting and found the light of day as mixed media later on:)

Reminds me Meera that sometimes empty pages are left in our life book here and there and we are not aware of them.. just needs to look back now and then, find them n try to fill them up :-)

Padmaja, thats a very interesting observation - blank pages in our life that we are unaware of ..... something to think about!
