Want or Need?

A Day In the Life ..in Blue Jeans with Gold Embroidery  - Page 13 (Sketchbook/fiction Project )color pencils

Do I call this co-incidence? This page done months ago was next in line to be posted. And as it happens,  I just returned from a week of retreat at the Arsha Vidya Gurukulam where the teaching is all about how to deal with desires, aversions, dispassion, work with the attitude of worship and to accept everything in the spirit of blessing.  This teaching more than anything reinforces how I should put forth my best effort, enjoy the process of painting and not get hung up on the final product. Over the years I have realized that it really frees up the creative process when I do the preparatory work,  trust my instincts and let things just be. I read and hear again and again that meditation and mindfulness will take  creativity and life to a different level - hope to be able to follow that advice consistently one of these days!

What philosophy nourishes your artistic endeavors?

About the shoes... they're all needs to me! That sounds like a wonderful retreat! Great drawings too!

Thank you @ Thaikaden. I still want/need those comments --appreciate your feed back :)

wants are always way to many, but if we lived only by needs may be we would be disinteresetd beings ?
never know...

that comment about enjoying the process i am going to take that to heart
love the brown boots ..with a short skirt and a loose shirt ?

B, Thank you for stopping by. For me the conflict between wants and needs goes on --especially acute when 'stuff' overwhelms me, or I want to clear clutter, or practice green living :)

The brown boots are are wonderful weatherproof winter ones by Merrell:)

Well I must admit you always make me think. I do believe in many things but I don't really think I have a specific philosophy. I definitely believe in enoying the journey as much as the destination. Another great sketch.

Kathy, thank you for the comment --I think you definitely know what matters --enjoying the journey as much as the destination!

nice thoughts and great interpretations....like the sketches and the last line! I have also felt that mind is at its creative best when your eyes are closed and you visualize!

Thanks @Sparrowhawk. There is so much evidence out there about meditation and mind --I have to really be disciplined about regular practice !!! Unfortunately, it is so easy to fill the time with other things.

You simplified a great complex philosophy of life with this simple sketch page, but the youth can be exempted from the philosophy till they become old enough to understand the same:-)

Meera Rao said...

Padmaja, Thank you! But I do wish I knew or understood this philosophy in my youth --would have saved me a lot of heartache !

Hi, Meere,
Your shoes are very charming! Regarding "philosophy," I feel paradox is ture. We're individual, but universal=have many common elements. Knowing is one thing & doing is another, but need both. Confidence is essential, but also, humble enough to challenge something new or accept critiques, etc, etc. And always a final step/decision is individual's.
Kind regards,Sadami

Sadami, that is beautiful! I hope to remember and put it into practice.

Meera, your question certainly made people think. People who have chosen an austere life dictated by only needs have usually turned away fully from the material world. It is hard to be part of the regular world and yet not be part of it.

Dina, Thank you for your input. You hit it on the head -- it is awfully hard to be part of the regular world and not be affected by it. But the rewards for doing that seems to priceless!
